Outlaw Marathon Training Diary – Weeks 5 & 6

You might have noticed that I didn’t post anything about my outlaw half marathon training last week – mainly because there hasn’t been very much to report. I started my Base Training Plan 2 weeks ago – this is where the serious training starts and I have to ramp up the time spent on my bike (mostly) and be very focussed around my swim and run sessions.

The bike has to be the most important element in a triathlon as it is where you spend the most time – up to 4 hours of the race in my case so therefore my coach constantly tells me that I can skip swim and run sessions but never the bike!

That being said, weeks 5 and 6 of my training were all about rest and recovery –which was a good thing in the end. I worked for 2 days at the BBC Good Food Show on the Thermomix stand which I really enjoyed – talking to people all day about cooking with the product I love! However, I started to feel a little under the weather – sore throat, headache etc. By Wednesday this had me completely bed bound where I stayed for the next 3 days. Thought I was feeling better by Friday night so was up and about over the weekend only to wake up this morning feeling almost back at square one again.

Lesson learnt – with a winter illness, give yourself plenty of recovery time or you’ll never shake it off. I don’t feel ready to start training just yet – so continuing to rest for the next few days. My Outlaw half marathon next Sunday is definitely not happening although hopefully I’ll be out on my bike to cheer on my friends who are running.
